Spandex is a rather bizarre polyurethane material forming a long chain synthetic polymeric fiber.  It contains rubbery and soft sections of polyester, also called polyether polyols. This is what gives the fiber the ability of stretching up to 600 percent, and then it bounces right back into shape. There are also harder sections, which is typically urethanes or urethane-ureas, which give the material rigidity, making it stronger while limiting plastic flow.

The Spandex technology of DuPont is so valuable that 10 years ago it was at the center of an attempt to extort money. Five employees at the Mercedes, Argentina DuPont Lycra Spandex plant stole highly important documents related to production technology and tried to get $10 million from DuPont to get them back. Following was a chase that went all over the globe including Wilmington, Delaware; Milan, Italy; ending in a Geneva, Switzerland parking lot. It was in Switzerland that the FBI and Swiss police were able to put a sting operation in place that enabled the police to arrest the extortionists. Who would have thought a Spandex bodysuit had this sort of background?

Women’s under garments are still the basis of DuPont’s Spandex business, even though they have expanded into other items such as a Spandex bodysuit. In the 1960s, Spandex was responsible for bringing in a period of “comfortable, soft-support pantyhose” as well as more intimate apparel. This material also was the cornerstone of women’s and men’s figure flattering swimwear. Then, in 1968, Lycra garments appeared on the French Olympic ski team.

During the 1970s, cyclists no longer wore their woolen shorts. Instead, they started wearing “aerodynamic” Spandex shorts, which opened the door to such things as tights, dancewear and stretch jeans. It was during the early part of the 1960s that Bayer introduced Spandex fiber in Germany. They didn’t start producing it in the United States until the middle of the 1990s. It was then that Bayer started making it at the Bushy Park, South Carolina site. Rarely is over 20 percent of Spandex used in a garment and it is often topped with another non-elastic fiber in woven fabrics. It can also be used bare or it can be covered up with knit fabrics. The elasticity of Spandex allows it to be an un-corseted fiber. Bayer spokespeople say that it wouldn’t be surprising to see it find it ways into using it in the auto market as well as sports shoes and even bed sheets.

All of this would be amazing, but it’s the Spandex bodysuit that has really gained attention in many worlds. There is even a fetish that many people have developed involving the wearing of Spandex. These people feel they simply must wear Spandex as a part of their sexual encounters. There are also groups of people that must wear Spandex all the time.
